Data Provenance Executive Summary

Background
The term “provenance” in the context of health information technology refers to evidence and attributes describing the origin of health information as it is captured in a health system. Data provenance provides the ability to trace and verify the creation of information, how it has been used or moved among different databases, as well as how it is altered throughout its life-cycle. Clinical information can be shared between:

  • Providers
  • Organizations
  • Health IT Systems

When information is shared, the recipient of the information must know the answers to some basic questions such as:

  • Can I trust it?
  • Has it been changed?

Below is a diagram demonstrating three potential scenarios of data provenance:

Why Pilot for Data Provenance?

  • Leverage your organization's name recognition
  • Increase pilot visibility
  • Receive recognition as an early adopter
  • Contribute to the HIT Community
  • Build on expertise, tools, and open-source code to create better, faster and higher quality implementation

Getting Involved:
Pilots are instrumental in developing a harmonized, workable, and technical solution to data provenance while effectively conveying where data originated. The Data Provenance Pilots will help define a more interoperable way to share provenance information. Get involved in the Data Provenance Pilots!

Initiative Approach:
Healthcare stakeholders must have confidence in the authenticity, reliability, and trustworthiness of shared data. This trust requires a clear trail of data provenance in order to validate and determine how to use the data. To help meet this challenge, the goals of this initiative include:

  • Establishing guidance for handling data provenance in content standards, including the level to which provenance should be applied
  • Establishing the minimum set of provenance data elements and vocabulary
  • Standardizing the provenance capabilities to ensure interoperability
