Official MU value set content is tied to specific releases, which are presently limited to occur on a yearly basis. Updating value sets to support changes on a more frequent basis is important feedback. Currently, the content of value sets is determined by value set owners on a code-by-code basis, in the future VSAC will be able to display updated value set content once value sets are defined using logical statements (an Intensional definition), but even with this change, barring a change in the statue for Meaningful Use, the official value sets will remain, as they are now, tied to defined releases. We appreciate feedback from the vendor community regarding the need for and impact of intermittent code system updates.

While I am using an example of antithrombolitic medicaion for this issue, the question can be extended to other vocabularies as well.

I am working with one of our customers regarding how to handle updated RxNorm values that come from their pharmacy system but are not included in the current quality measure value set. The example is that various Stroke measures refer to RxNorm code 198211 for Simvastatin 40 MG Oral Tablet but do not include 152923 also a legitimate value for prescribing, but is not included in the value set.

Please advise regarding the recommended approach for supporting such midcycle updates to quality measure values.

      Thank you.
