Thank you for your feedback regarding CMS1017v2, Hospital Harm - Falls with Injury. The intent and desired outcome for this eCQM is to track falls with major or moderate injury and aim to reduce rates of inpatient falls resulting in injury during the hospitalization. There are no plans to include patients who have a fall POA then have a subsequent fall in this measure at this time. We will continue to monitor this issue for potential updates in the future.

    • Hospital Harm measures are meant to increase safe patient care in hospital stays. By excluding patients who have a fall POA, you are not assessing the hospital's true harm rates for patients who have repeat falls in the hospital.

Patients who present to the hospital with a fall present on admission are excluded from this measure.  A hospital should be responsible to keep those patients safe, who have fallen prior to their hospitalization.  Injuries sustained that are POA should be excluded, but injuries sustained from a subsequent fall in the hospital should be included.

Suggested solution text conserved from the Solution field:

Include patients who have previous history of falls in the measure. Injuries sustained from a fall that were POA should be excluded.  Further injuries sustained from subsequent falls should be included.
