Why were the ICD-9 codes for asthma removed?

    • As you noted, ICD-9-CM codes are not specific enough to differentiate persistent asthma. Use of ICD-10-CM or SNOMED-CT is required to implement this measure.

      I noticed the ICD-9 codes for asthma were removed from the NQF 0036 spec. Presumably this is because they don't actually identify "persistent" asthma. However, many of our customers don't yet collect ICD-10-CM or SNOMED-CT codes associated to diagnoses, so they will be reporting very low numbers which wouldn't necessarily be clinically accurate.

      Any chance ICD-9 codes would be acceptable for this measure?

      Perhaps not so much of an issue as general feedback...
