Thank you for your question. CMS819v3 Hospital Harm - Opioid-Related Adverse Events utilizes the hospital service location code (HSLOC) of 1096-7 to identify Operating Room/Suite. The measure does not include all OR locations listed in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Locations and Descriptions and Instructions for Mapping Patient Care Locations document. The measure intent does not consider procedural areas, such as those used for Interventional Radiology or Cardiac Catheterization Room/Suite, and therefore opioid antagonist administrations in these areas would be counted in the numerator. There are currently no plans to exclude other procedure locations from the measure.

    • We have a case in the numerator that I feel should be excluded.

Under the CDC Operating Room guidance, Interventional Radiology and Cardiac Catheterization Room/Suite are considered Operating Room Locations.

We have a case that the pt was given the opioid antagonist medication for their IR procedure by an anesthesiologist. This patient was sedated during her IR procedure and needed NARCAN for hypoxemia. They woke up. I would consider this an exclusion as the situation occurred during a procedure attempt. However, our IR procedure rooms are not labeled as OR rooms. What is the measure definition of an operating room - does this rule apply to all procedure rooms where Anesthesia is administered? Does it follow the CDC guidance?
