Thank you for your inquiry regarding CMS996: Appropriate Treatment for ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) Patients in the Emergency Department (ED). The measure excludes encounters in which the patient expired in the ED. Only ED encounters with a discharge disposition of patient expired, as indicated by SNOMEDCT code 371828006: Patient deceased during stay (discharge status = dead) (finding), will be excluded from the measure. This SNOMEDCT code is captured in the measure’s Patient Expired value set (OID: 2.16.840.1.113883.3.117.1.7.1.309) in the Value Set Authority Center (VSAC) [https://vsac.nlm.nih.gov/valueset/2.16.840.1.113883.3.117.1.7.1.309/expansion/Latest]. Please note, to view this code in VSAC, you may need to create a free account. If the patient’s ED encounter does not have a patient expired discharge disposition as indicated by the aforementioned SNOMEDCT code, they will not be excluded from the measure denominator.

If a patient expired during the STEMI encounter, but not in the ED, will this still exclude them from the measure? Thank You
