Thank you for your inquiry regarding CMS996v5, Appropriate Treatment for ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) Patients in the Emergency Department (ED). Updated Version 6 STEMI measure specifications for the 2026 reporting period were recently posted to the eCQI Resource Center: https://ecqi.healthit.gov/ecqm/hosp-outpt/2026/cms0996v6?qt-tabs_measure=measure-information. In the Version 6 update, we renamed the “Cardiopulmonary Arrest” value set to “Cardiopulmonary Emergency” (OID: 2.16.840.1.113883.3.3157.4048). An updated list of clinical codes captured in this value set can be found on the Value Set Authority Center [https://vsac.nlm.nih.gov/valueset/2.16.840.1.113883.3.3157.4048/expansion/Latest]. Please note that you may need to create a free account to view these codes. Thank you for the recommendation to add defibrillation codes to this value set. CMS and the measure developer will consider updates to the Cardiopulmonary Emergency value set in a future annual update.

    • CMS0996v5
    • Capturing defibrillation for denominator exception

CMS996v5: According to the Specs, During ED encounter, Cardiopulmonary arrest includes defibrillation. However, Defibrillation is not in the Value Sets for Cardiopulmonary Arrest OID: 2.16.840.1.113883.3.3157.4048, as there is no CPT code solely for defibrillation.

How is defibrillation going to be captured by CMS if there is no coding for it, will exclusions be revised in the future?
