Thank you for your question regarding CMS506v7 Safe Use of Opioids - Concurrent Prescribing. That is correct, the measure logic specifies that the opioids must be distinct, which means that they must have different RXNorm codes.

In your first example, Percocet 7.5mg 2 tablets q6 PRN and Percocet 7.5mg 1 tablet q6 PRN, would have the same RXNORM code and the patient would be in the denominator but not the numerator.

In your second example, Hydrocodone 10mg q6 prn and Hydrocodone 10mg q6 prn, would have the same RXNORM code and the patient would be in the denominator but not the numerator.

    • Unsure if our safe use of opioid epic report has the correct criteria applied for opioids.

For the Safe Use of Opioids measure, there was a recent Joint Commission Webinar on July 17th. According to slide 35, in order for an opioid to be considered "distinct" for the numerator, medications must have different RXNorm codes and it states the codes do not distinguish prescriptions by dosing instructions.

      For example:

-If a patient is prescribed percocet 7.5mg 2 tablets q6 PRN and percocet 7.5mg 1 tablet q6 PRN, would these medications have different RXNorm codes?

-If a patient is prescribed hydrocodone 10mg q6 prn now at discharge and also prescribed hydrocodone 10mg q6 prn to start in the future (8/1/25), would these medications have different RXNorm codes?
