Thank you for your question regarding CMS871v5, Hospital Harm - Severe Hyperglycemia. This measure assesses the number of inpatient hospital days for patients age 18 and older with a hyperglycemic event (harm) per the total qualifying inpatient hospital days for that encounter. As this is a ratio measure, the measure includes two measure observations that assess the inpatient hospitalizations identified through the numerator and denominator criteria to return the inpatient hospital days that are ultimately used in the measure calculation. Please note that as this measure is ratio measure, it calculates a ratio and not a performance rate. More information on how ratio measures are calculated can be found in the CMS MMS Hub’s Measure Calculations Guide (https://mmshub.cms.gov/sites/default/files/Measure-Calculations.pdf).

Please see the attached example for an illustration of how the measure’s ratio would be calculated using the example numbers you provided in your inquiry.

I’m reaching out to request clarification on the methodology used to calculate the Severe Hyperglycemia (HH-Hyper) measure. Specifically, I would like to confirm whether the measure observations or the performance numerator and performance denominator are used for the final performance rate calculation.

      • Performance Numerator = 32
      • Performance Denominator = 377
      • Measure Observation 1 (Denominator Association) = 1245
      • Measure Observation 2 (Numerator Association) = 49

Using the numbers above, should the performance rate be 3.9% (measure observations) or 8.5% (performance numerator/denominator)

Can you please clarify which data points should be used when calculating the measure rate?
