Thank you for your inquiry. Note that this measure is for preventative care and screening. Per the measure's Rationale section: "This measure seeks to align with USPSTF clinical guideline recommendations as well as the Healthy People 2030 recommendation to increase the proportion of adolescents and adults who are screened for depression and if positive, receive appropriate treatment (U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, 2016; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2020)."

Therefore, to encourage providers to screen their entire qualifying population for depression on an ongoing basis, they are given credit for screening even when the tool determines that the patient is not experiencing depression. Limiting the initial population to those who screened positive, would only assess a sub-population to evaluate treatment or follow-up actions rather than preventative screening overall. The way that the measure is currently structured aligns with clinical guidelines and allows providers to identify gaps in screening their entire patient population rather than just whether they are applying follow-up to the subset that they happened to have screened.

    • Our providers are unclear why patients screened negative for depression on PHQ9 would contribute to meeting the numerator. With better understanding of the Numerator, our reports can be viewed with more reliability.

      Hi,

Why are patients who screened negative for depression included in the Numerator?

Why not only include in the numerator the patients who have been positively screened for depression AND have follow-up?

What is the point of including those patients who screened negative for depression in the Numerator?
