Thank you for inquiring about the Preventive Care and Screening: Body Mass Index (BMI) Screening and Follow-Up Plan eCQM. We are aware of the challenges with reporting the BMI measure in dental patients. We will be re-evaluating the measure criteria with our Expert Work Group during the next annual update. The dental HCPCS code you specified (D1310) is for nutritional counseling for controlling and preventing dental disease. The measure’s Guidance section indicates: “The documented follow-up plan must be based on the documented BMI, outside of normal parameters, example: "Patient referred to nutrition counseling for BMI above or below normal parameters.””. If your dental patients have nutritional and/or exercise counseling follow-up explicitly documented as BMI-related, it could be mapped to a valid code within the value set.

    • For Dental-only patients, we are unable to capture exercise and nutrition counseling for BMI follow-up using the codes in the value set 2.16.840.1.113883.6.90.

Our FQHC has some patients who only receive dental services from our organization and have a primary care provider with another organization. Our dental providers document BMI intervention with code D1310. Since the value set does not contain dental service codes for BMI intervention, can you provide guidance on how to capture nutrition and exercise counseling for dental-only patients?
