Thank you for your question regarding CMS871v4, Hospital Harm - Severe Hyperglycemia. For ratio measures, the Numerator is pulled directly from the measure’s Initial Population. This is different than proportion measures, where a measure’s Numerator is a subset of the measure’s Denominator. In a ratio measure, the Numerator is not a subset of the Denominator, and exclusion criteria are not applied to encounters in the measure’s Numerator unless Numerator Exclusions are present. Therefore, the CMS871v4 Numerator Exclusions are present to ensure that the same encounters that meet the Denominator Exclusions criteria and are removed from the Denominator are also removed from the Numerator.

    • Is it possible for a case to have a Denominator Exclusion and not a Numerator Exclusion? If so, please provide scenario

I understand that the logic is needed because of the ratio measure. SInce the exclusion criteria are the same, I am unclear how a case could have a Denominator Exclusion but not a Numerator Exclusion.

Please provide a scenario in which there would be an Exclusion in the one but not the other.

      Thank  you
