If a patient is identified as a STEMI in the ED, went to cath lab but did not require a PCI, will it be an outlier?

Thank you for your inquiry regarding CMS0996: Appropriate Treatment for ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) Patients in the Emergency Department (ED). Our understanding is that you are seeking clarification on whether patients that arrive to the ED with a STEMI diagnoses, but ultimately do not receive a PCI are excluded from the measure (i.e. outliers).

The measure defines appropriate treatment using three numerators: fibrinolytic therapy within 30 minutes of ED arrival, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) within 90 minutes of ED arrival, or transfer to acute care within 45 minutes of ED arrival. The numerator outcomes for fibrinolytic therapy and transfer care both capture alternative treatments to PCI for STEMI patients.

    • Resulting in an outlier even though the patient did not require a PCI

There are 3 patients for the month of November that were STEMI alerts in the ED, taken to the cath lab but no PCI was required.
