Thank you for your inquiry regarding CMS2 Preventive Care and Screening: Screening for Depression and Follow-Up Plan. The measure steward explored potentially adding a time limitation to the exclusion of patients with a history of depression or bipolar disorder, OR whether it is appropriate to continue to exclude patients with a history of depression or bipolar disorder and if the measure denominator should be expanded to include them.

After performing a focused literature review in response to these requests, and evaluating potential changes to the exclusions of this measure with various interested parties, the final recommendation was made by the expert work group to continue excluding patients who have ever had a bipolar disorder diagnosis but recommended including all patients with a history of depression, regardless of status (active or inactive/resolved), explaining it is clinically appropriate to continue screening these patients.

Both conditions, bipolar disorder and depression, and their impact to the measure are monitored on an annual basis to determine their appropriateness for inclusion in the measure.

Could you provide insight into the decision to remove the depression diagnosis as an exclusion for the Depression Screening & Follow-Up metric (eCQM ID: CMS2v13)? My understanding is that this screening is intended for patients who have not been diagnosed with depression during the measurement period, making it less applicable for those currently diagnosed and receiving treatment. Any guidance or information you can share for me to discuss with clinical leaders would be greatly appreciated. I would appreciate any guidance or information that I could share with clinical leaders.
