Thank you for your inquiry regarding CMS986: Global Malnutrition Composite Score (GMCS). The Initial Population of the measure is defined as “Inpatient hospitalizations during the measurement period with length of stay of 24 hours or more among individuals 65 years of age and older at the start of the inpatient encounter.” Therefore, the inclusion of behavioral health patients will depend on the documented classification of the visit encounter. If the behavioral health patient encounter is classified as an inpatient encounter and the patient meets the other population inclusion criteria, it will be included in the measure.

Are Behavioral Health inpatient encounters included in the GMCS patient population evaluated for this measure?

We have two instances when patients are admitted to behavioral health services. If a patient is medically cleared by the ED, they can be admitted to behavioral health as an inpatient. We also have patients who are admitted as an inpatient to medical services. Once medically cleared, these patients are discharged from acute care and admitted as an inpatient to our behavioral health services.

      Thank you.
