Thank you for your inquiry. Heparin drip for A-Fib treatment does not qualify the patient for the VTE Prophylaxis measure. Per the information provided, the patient was given one of the heparin medications included in the value set "Low Dose Unfractionated Heparin for VTE Prophylaxis" (2.16.840.1.113762.1.4.1045.39). If so, per the specification Guidance section, “[w]hen low dose unfractionated heparin is administered for VTE prophylaxis, the intended administration route for low dose unfractionated heparin is subcutaneous.” One-time IVP doses of heparin are not sufficient for VTE prophylaxis, and therefore, a reason for not administering VTE prophylaxis is necessary for the patient to pass VTE-1 and 2 numerators.

For VTE-1 & VTE-2 --I'm finding cases where a patient was started on heparin drips (ex NSTEMI, STEMI, atrial fib diagnosis) but per our EHR experts they do not pass because it is not the subq injection for VTE prophylaxis. Is an additional order "reason for no VTE prophylaxis" needed in these cases or does the anticoagulant drip suffice?
