I have a unique situation that was brought to my attention, and I wanted to reach out for clarification. This is regarding Quality Measure #19 Diabetic Retinopathy: Communication with the Physician Managing Ongoing Diabetes Care, reporting eCQM CMS142v12. We have several retinal specialists in our practice who see diabetic patients to treat their retinopathy, however, these specific patients receive their yearly diabetic eye exams from another doctor outside of our practice. With the patient's retinopathy only being in one eye, our physicians are just dilating that one eye at all their visits. Of course, this is prompting a diabetic letter, since they have the active diagnosis, we would like confirmation that if we send a letter with having just one eye dilated will this cause us to fail the measure? I have reviewed the Quality Measure sheet and nowhere in the documentation does it mention that both eyes must be dilated to successfully meet this measure. Please confirm if dilating one eye will suffice for those patients having retinopathy in only one eye.
