Thank you for your question regarding CMS506v6, Safe Use of Opioids - Concurrent Prescribing. The denominator exclusions section in the measure header states, “Inpatient hospitalizations where patients have cancer that begins prior to or during the encounter,” indicating an active diagnosis. Therefore, having a history of cancer would not meet denominator exclusion criteria for the measure.

    • Patients with history of cancer are being included in the denominator exclusion

Our team is noticing patients falling to the denominator exclusion with only a history of cancer.  We are seeking clarification if having a history of cancer would result in a denominator exclusion or if the cancer has to be an active diagnosis.
