Thank you for your question regarding CMS506v5 Safe Use of Opioids - Concurrent Prescribing.

The medications you have referenced have different delivery forms for the same drug. However, they have differing RXNorm codes, as they are not the same.

As noted in the value set Schedule II & III Opioid Medications (2.16.840.1.113762.1.4.1111.165):

"oxycodone 5 mg oral tablet" is RXNorm code 1049621

"oxycodone 5 mg oral capsule" is RXNorm code 1049696.

Because the RXNorm codes differ, they would be considered two different medications.

      Hello,

I understand that the "form" of the drug - whether opioid or benzodiazepine - affects how the medications are identified for this measure.

Are "oxycodone 5 mg oral tablet" and "oxycodone 5 mg oral capsule" both prescribed on discharge considered to be the same form = "oral" ?

      Thank you.
