Thank you for the question about VTE-2 CMS190v12 Intensive Care Unit Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis. You are correct that the VTE-2 measure is looking for patients discharged from an inpatient hospital stay. If a patient was discharged from Observation Status, they would not meet the required ‘Inpatient Hospitalization’ required to qualify for both the ‘Initial Population’ and ‘Denominator’ for the VTE-2 measure . In the case provided, it would be contingent on how ICU admission is documented. If the ICU admission in question is considered as inpatient admission, this case this would meet the denominator requirement “Inpatient hospitalizations for patients directly admitted or transferred to ICU during the hospitalization” and would be eligible for VTE-2 reporting as the discharge from ICU is considered as an inpatient discharge.

We are looking for clarification of the initial patient population for STK-6 (Intensive Care Unit Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis). The specs state the IPP is "inpatient hospitalizations for patient age 18 and older, discharged from hospital inpatient acute care....". We have a case where the patient's patient class went from observation, to an ICU unit, and then back to observation. Their patient class at discharge was "Observation". Should this patient still be included for STK-6? Because the specs specifically note "inpatient acute care" we interpret that as the patient class needing to be INPT at discharge.
