Thank you for your inquiry regarding CMS2v13: Preventative Care and Screening: Screening for Depression and Follow-up Plan.
A referral to primary care service as a follow-up plan for depression is adequate and meets the measure's intent as long as it is documented for further evaluation for depression. A full list of qualifying referrals can be found in the "Follow Up Intervention for Positive Adolescent Depression Screening" and "Follow Up Intervention for Positive Adult Depression Screening" value sets.

These value sets are found on The National Library of Medicine's Value Set Authority

Center (VSAC), https://vsac.nlm.nih.gov/ . The VSAC provides downloadable access to all official versions of value sets content contained in the eCQM specifications. The value sets are lists of unique coded identifiers with names (called descriptors) for groupings of clinical and administrative concepts selected from standard vocabularies.

      Hello,

we are seeking clarification on conflicting information posted on the CQM resource center relating to the Depression screening and follow up. In one inquiry, when a sub-specialist (for ex cardiologist) screens patients and they have a positive depression screening, it was stated that a referral back to the PCP specifying it is as a follow up for depression, was considered adequate. In a second inquiry, a referral back to the PCP was not considered adequate as it was stated, the provider needed to be someone who could treat depression. Can you clarify what is CMS position on this issue?
