Thank you for your question about the CMS506: Safe Use of Opioids – Concurrent Prescribing. This patient would be captured in the numerator for this measure. Even though the second opioid was prescribed prior to admission, it would be captured by the measure logic as there was a second opioid present at the time of discharge. This measure looks at all opioids at discharge, patients who are discharged with two or more opioids regardless of when they are prescribed would remain in the numerator for the measure.

    • Opioid prior to inpatient admission and not ordered on discharged

We have a patient in the numerator for safe use of opioids eCQM.  Patient was prescribed one opioid at discharge.  A second opioid is also capturing for the eCQM.  The second opioid was not ordered on discharge but ordered about 20 days prior to this admission.  Since the second opioid was not ordered at discharged of the inpatient encounter, should this patient not be in the numerator?
