Thank you for your inquiry regarding the CMS871v2, Hospital Harm - Severe Hyperglycemia measure. The intent of the measure to consider all blood glucose results that were collected during the first 10 days of a patient’s hospitalization to evaluate whether a severe hyperglycemic event occurred. The measure does not consider the methodology by which you capture a blood glucose result; it is only looking for the blood glucose result(s). Therefore all ‘tests’ performed in the hospital that result a patient’s blood glucose level (i.e., CMP, BMP, POC testing) should be included to meet the intent of the measure.

Our current report from Cerner only includes laboratory blood glucoses. The spec guidance states, "Blood glucose levels are determined by laboratory or point-of-care (POC) tests, including capillary/glucometer blood glucose tests."

Will we be in compliance with the measure expectations if our data only includes laboratory results?  The use of the word OR in the guidance could be read to mean one or the other is acceptable but it could also mean that any glucose that meets the parameters needs to be included.  If it needs to include all blood glucose results, my report from Cerner needs correction.
