Thank you for your inquiry on CMS347 Statin Therapy for the Prevention and Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease. Pregnancy was removed from the Denominator Exclusion to align with the FDA drug safety guidelines. In July 2021, the FDA requested removal of its strongest warning against using cholesterol-lowering statin medicines in pregnant patients (https://www.fda.gov/drugs/fda-drug-safety-podcasts/fda-requests-removal-strongest-warning-against-using-cholesterol-lowering-statins-during-pregnancy#:~:text=On%20July%2020%2C%202021%2C%20FDA%20requested%20removal%20of,stop%20statins%20once%20they%20learn%20they%20are%20pregnant). We do understand that there will cases where a pregnant patient should stop taking a statin. For these scenarios, please use the Denominator Exception: Patients with documentation of a medical reason for not being prescribed statin therapy. Please make sure it is properly documented in the EHR.

It is interpreted that the FDA update still advises against statins in pregnancy. We don't think any providers would likely start a statin during pregnancy, even if the patient had Gestational Diabetes. Why is this exclusion removed as it seems that it is contrary to the FDA recommendations?
