    • Verify the diagnosis of active senile cataract should be included as an exception to the denominator as a complicated cataract (as it currently is).

CQM 132 tracks patients with a diagnosis of uncomplicated cataracts who had cataract surgery. It appears that most patients in this denominator (88% in my practice) are categorized as "exception" because the diagnosis "Active: Senile cataract" is considered complicated. We are finding that because the list of exceptions to the denominator (to define uncomplicated cataract) is so vast, most patients in the denominator end up as an exception. This doesn't seem to be the intent. Is it possible the definition of complicated vs uncomplicated cataracts is incorrect?
