Overview

CMS is working in collaboration with the DHHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) on pilot(s) to allow providers to register with payers to receive electronic medical documentation requests (eMDRs), and to allow payers to respond to a registration request to receive eMDRs.

The purpose of the provider registration pilot is to implement solutions to:

1. Register providers with CMS and other payers to receive electronic medical document requests
2. Support CMS and other appropriate payers in securely sending medical documentation request to HIHs/Providers (Phase two – not scheduled at this time)
   
   

These solutions, combined with other esMD Initiative efforts, will enable CMS Review Contractors to send electronic medical document requests as an alternative to current paper processes.
