Connecting Health and Care for the Nation: A Shared Nationwide Interoperability Roadmap, published by ONC in 2015 as to guide stakeholder focus in the near- and long-term and to catalyze and to lay out a path building and using health IT (Section M, Health Care Directories and Resource Location, addresses provider directories)
2016 Interoperability Standards Advisory, which provides a single, public list of standards and implementation specifications that can best be used to fulfill specific health information interoperability needs, and to reflect of ongoing dialogue, debate, and consensus among industry stakeholders best available standards to meet those needs, published by ONC in 2016 (Section III-D: Provider Directory addresses provider directories)

HITPC Provider Directory Environmental Scan, presented to the HITPC in 2010, is a dated scan with now obsolete information, but provides a comprehensive framework for assessment provider directories
HITPC Summary of Final Recommendations on Individual-Level Provider Directory (ILPD) , presented to the HITPC in 2011, provides final recommendations on provider directories for individual provider information in the then-common ILPD/ELPD directory structure for individual and entity provider directories

ONC Modular Specification (ModSpec) Provider Directory wiki page, with artifacts, last updated in 2013, attempting to unify the HPD and HPD+ specifications and define an approach to federation using HPD that was not implemented but led to the federated option in HPD
Practical Guide to Populating and Maintaining Provider Directories for Health Information Exchange, a report drafted by the Provider Directory Community of Practice for ONC in 2012 based on interviews with leaders of active state HIEs and provider directory vendors

IHE ITI Technical Framework Supplement, Healthcare Provider Directory (HPD) for Trial Implementation version 1.6, an interoperable data model and API for (optionally) federated provider directories based on LDAP and SOAP web services
IHE Wiki for the Healthcare Provider Directory (HPD) USA National Extension, which is intended to define an extension to the international HPD standard to meet specific use cases and data needs of the US market
Statewide Send and Receive Patient Records Technical Specification version 1.1 (which includes HPD+ v1.1), an extension of the initial release of HPD that expanded its capabilities to represent complex relationships among individual providers and organizations, and the context for electronic information exchange, capabilities now included in recent versions of HPD
FHIR Draft Standard for Trial Use 2, the current published specification for Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources by HL7, which includes resources for Practitioner, Organization, and Location that may be used in provider directories
