Connecting Health and Care for the Nation: A Shared Nationwide Interoperability Roadmap, published by ONC in 2015 as to guide stakeholder focus in the near- and long-term and to catalyze and to lay out a path building and using health IT (Section M, Health Care Directories and Resource Location, addresses provider directories)

IHE Wiki for the Healthcare Provider Directory (HPD) USA National Extension, which is intended to define an extension to the international HPD standard to meet specific use cases and data needs of the US market
Statewide Send and Receive Patient Records Technical Specification version 1.1 (which includes HPD+ v1.1), an extension of the initial release of HPD that expanded its capabilities to represent complex relationships among individual providers and organizations, and the context for electronic information exchange, capabilities now included in recent versions of HPD
FHIR Draft Standard for Trial Use 2, the current published specification for Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources by HL7, which includes resources for Practitioner, Organization, and Location that may be used in provider directories
