This suggestion was submitted as erratum #271 to HL7 QRDA Category I DSTU.

"Communications (sections 7.7,7.8,7.9) all lack appropriate definition of the 'code' element that describes the type of communication. The example in each section includes the code.

In each section, the code is bound to a specific SNOMED code (158965000 – Medical practitioner (occupation)), and an inappropriate CONF# that links to 'participant role' is provided. The constraint on the first participant role in the table for each section is blank. Looks like the 'fixed value' that is in the 'code' field should go to the first participant role, and the CONF# as well."

It seems clear that the code for the type of communication (e.g. Macular Edema Findings Present (Code List: 2.16.840.1.113883.3.526.3.1323) ) goes in the 'code' field.

This issue has been added to HL7 DSTU page http://www.hl7.org/dstucomments/showdetail_comment.cfm?commentid=271; therefore, we will close it here and interested parties can follow using the HL7 link above. The submitter has correctly identified that we need to add an xpath mapping into Table 324 of QRDA-III. The submitter is also correct that the xpath will point to [CommunicationTemplate]/code.

I believe the QRDA Cat I DTSU is missing a required code element in the Communication From Patient To Providers component.

In the attached Cypress test patient, she has two entries Communication From Patient To Providers. From what I can tell, this type of information should go into the QRDA based on the QRDA Cat I DSTU Section 7.7 (7.7 Communication from Patient to Provider). In the example message from that section (copied in the other attachment), it shows the communication preference being addressed in the first <code> element.

However, if you look up table with the xPath description, it does not make a reference to a code element to insert the specific communication method. Thus, I do not know where this info from the Cypress Tanya Watson should be placed.

I think that this code element was inadvertently left out of the QRDA spec as it is in the example section.
