Hospital Harm – Hypoglycemia
We believe this will be a valuable measure. Tracking hypoglycemia is an important safety issue. The choice of 40 mg/dl threshold would be a measure of severe hypoglycemia. The ADA has recently defined hypoglycemia as < 54 mg/dl and while this would result in more cases being identified, many of which are less severe, it might decrease the burden of measure collection for those facilities that are already tracking hypoglycemia according to the ADA definition. Adding that the patient has received hypoglycemic medications in the previous 24 hours would likely increase the burden of collection, but it is important as it would filter out cases who present with hypoglycemia or who develop it on the basis of sepsis, severe liver disease, insulinoma, etc. So we support that filter on the denominator.
