    • Comment - PSA Screening

The proposed measure to discourage providers from ordering screening PSA tests will negatively impact how we diagnose and manage men at risk for prostate cancer. The data used to generate the USPSTF recommendations against PSA screening for all men was based on data obtained decades ago and in no way reflects how urologists currently manage men diagnosed with prostate cancer. Our focus is identifying and treating those men with higher risk cancers whose health and longevity will likely be affected by their prostate cancer if left untreated. Well over 50% of our patients diagnosed with prostate cancer currently elect a course of initial active surveillance, avoiding treatments such as prostatectomy and radiation therapy. Do not take away our ability to identify those men who would benefit from prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. Otherwise, the state of prostate cancer in the United States will be pushed back to the pre-PAS era during which up to 85% of men presented with locally advanced or metastatic prostate cancer.
