    • Comment - PSA Screening

As a prostate cancer survivor and educator (both locally and nationally on-line) I meet many men with prostate cancer or concerns about getting it. In my experience the PSA test, combined with the DRE, provides the simplest and most acceptable screening currently available. Yes, newer tests are being developed and may soon replace PSA/DRE, but until they are universally deployed and available the current screening is still the first choice. And yes, it is clear that over-treatment based on PSA screening has and continues to happen, but that is an educational and administrative problem that is being resolved with greater awareness of the limits of these screening tests. For that majority of men who for geographic or administrative reasons do not have access to the centers of excellence for prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment, PSA/DRE remains the essential tool for early diagnosis in a disease which rarely has other symptoms in its early most curable stages.
