    • Comment - PSA Screening

I am a survivor of prostate cancer. I was fortunate enough to survive this cancer because a PSA screening done as part of my yearly physical exam showed a marked increase in PSA levels. Biopsy resulted in a Gleason 6, but pathology results post surgery showed a Gleason high 7 - just shy of metastasis. I would have been facing a much more dire prognosis if I had waited for symptoms to drive me to treatment instead of the PSA triggering intervention. I realize that the PSA test is by no means perfect and often results in false positive scores. However, results can be confirmed by biopsy. I believe that this test saves lives. It certainly narrowly saved me from requiring more aggressive treatment at the very least and may well have saved my life. Please do not introduce measures to inhibit the use of the PSA exam.
