The American Academy of Ophthalmology would request the removal of the following CPT codes from the Vitreous Procedures ValueSet (2.16.840.1.113883.3.526.3.1447):

67028 - Intravitreal injection of a pharmacologic agent (separate procedure)

Intravitreal injections are now commonly performed for the management of age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. The AAO believes the majority of injections are performed for management of these conditions and are not related to any postoperative complications of cataract surgery. Furthermore, the injection code was originally intended to identify patients who required further intervention for endophthalmitis, we believe the codes related to vitrectomy procedures will adequately identify these patients.
