esMD Initiative Phase - Pilots
esMD Demonstration and Pilot projects will exercise defined aspects of the Provider Profiles Authentication (PPA), Author of Record (AoR), and Electronic Determination of Coverage (eDoC) Implementation Guides in a real-world setting. The real-world pilots evaluate not only the technology and standards, but also provide a test bed to evaluate the interaction of technology, implementation support, and operational infrastructure required to meet the objectives of the esMD Use Cases at the stakeholder or organization levels.

Guidelines for a Pilot Project
Proposing a Pilot Project
- Register to participate as an esMD Pilot and indicate which Use Case you intend to pilot at the esMD Pilots Registration page.
- Submit a Pilot Project Profile to the esMD Pilot leads using the following template:
- The esMD RI/Pilots Workgroup Support Team will then create a Pilot Brief Wiki page for your organization. The Pilot Brief page will be linked to in the esMD Pilot Projects table below.
- Participate in pilot project discussion calls (workgroup meetings) to explain pilot proposal(s) and answer community questions.
- After the Pilot Brief is complete, the Community reviews the proposal pilot based on criteria defined below, and if necessary, suggests modifications. Accepted Pilots are indicated on the esMD Pilot Projects table.
Criteria for acceptance as an esMD Pilot Project
- Proposing organization should be registered as a committed member.
- Project should be distinct from other proposed pilots in terms of stakeholders, provider types, or goals.
- Project should include a set of measurable objectives, providing feedback on the esMD Use Cases, esMD Implementation Guides, etc.
- The proposing organization will commit adequate resources (people, infrastructure) to successfully complete the proposed scope.
Guidelines as an accepted esMD Pilot Project
- Maintain your organization's Pilot Brief Wiki page.
- Name one or more individual(s) as the ‘pilot leader’ (who will represent the pilot on all workgroup calls).
- Use esMD RI/Pilots WG wiki and communication tools to document status and operations of project.
- Participate in esMD RI/Pilots Workgroup calls and provide regular status updates.
- Conform to esMD RI/Pilots Initiative timeline.
- Provide pilot feedback to esMD Leadership/CMS, including lessons learned and intended next steps.
- It is recommended to complete a Configuration Guide for your Pilot to provide additional details.
Pilot Success Metrics
Examples: Time and Cost to implement system changes – determine cost/benefits
- Pilot defined test cases execute successfully
- Enable appropriate sharing of data that otherwise would not have been shared – define volume of transactions/messages
