Solution: | UPDATE: We are revising our answer below to align with previous answers. CMS506 excludes patients with consult orders for the comfort measures value set (1.3.6.1.4.1.33895.1.3.0.45) and hospice order value set (2.16.840.1.113883.3.600.1.1579) as exclusions.
Thank you for your question regarding CMS506v6. The denominator exclusions section in the measure header states, “… are ordered or are receiving palliative or hospice care (including comfort measures, terminal care, and dying care) during the hospitalization,” therefore having an order for a palliative care consult would not be included as a comfort measures intervention and would not qualify as a denominator exclusion for the measure. |

Impact: | Patients with orders for palliative care/hospice consults only are being included in the denominator exclusion for 'comfort measures' |
Description |
Our team is noticing patients falling to the denominator exclusion with only an order to consult hospice or palliative care. We are seeking clarification if having an consult for a palliative care would be included as a comfort measures intervention. I believe only having a consult for palliative care would NOT be considered as a comfort measures intervention/hospice since this simply indicates the palliative team will go see the patient (not that the patient will accept the palliative treatment/intervention) |
